Drive by the Southwest Family YMCA in Austin off of Oakclaire Drive and Hwy 290, and you will still see construction equipment outside.

However, what you do not see is the renovations that have already been made inside the building.

Following eight months of construction, the 26,000 square foot facility has been expanded to 38,000 square feet.

It is all part of a $5.5 million, two-phase project to expand the center. Under the first phase, an outdoor pool was constructed, which features a six-lane lap pool and splash area for children.

Indoors you will find a new gymnasium, indoor running and walking tracks, and new cardio and fitness equipment. The extra space also allows for a cycle studio and group exercise room.

YMCA of Austin CEO James Finck said the facility helps to fulfill the larger goal of the YMCA.

"We want our facility to be the hub of the community and serve all," he said. "Not just health, but families and skill development."

The YMCA also offers a variety of classes and programs geared for all ages, including classes for toddlers. (Article continues after video.)

"That's the fruit of our labor, when we can create an environment where people can develop to the fullest potential, that's good," Finck said.

YMCA officials said phase two of the renovation project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Under the second phase, the additions will include a kitchen, expanded Child Watch and locker room area.

Finck said the project has been funded largely through capital funds, made up of unused money the YMCA accumulated over the years in addition to loan financing.

Monday is the official ribbon cutting for the building. As part of the celebration, there will be a free family Labor Day Splash Bash from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
