The 2010 AVIA Austin Triathlon started off with a splash at Auditorium Shores Monday morning.
Race organizers said at least 2,100 people registered for the race.
Kristin Halbrook said many Central Texans have been bitten by the triathlon bug.
"It just takes a lot of dedication, a lot of discipline, but I think anybody can do it," she said.
After the tri-athletes get out of the water and take off their wetsuits, they bike a distance of 40 kilometers. Then the rubber meets the road for a 10-K run if part of the Olympic triathlon distance.
"I'm looking forward to that finish line, knowing that the training in all the summer heat paid off,” Halbrook said. “I'm looking forward to the next one.”
Training for next year’s triathlon starts immediately, she said.
