NEW BRAUNFELS — Search crews with the New Braunfels Fire Department located the body of 23-year-old Derek Joel-Nelson Clemens of Baldwin, Mich. about half a mile downstream of the Faust Street footbridge.
Authorities said Clemens was one of two men swept down the Guadalupe River by floodwaters fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine Wednesday. New Braunfels police Lt. John Wells said the men were swimming with their girlfriends when they got caught in a fast-moving current and were swept over Mill Dam.
Witnesses said they lost sight of Nikos Paraskevopoulos, 28, after he went over the dam, and saw Clemens being carried toward an Interstate-35 overpass.
New Braunfels officials launched three search boats and stationed spotters several miles downstream searching until 10 p.m. Wednesday night before they suspended the search overnight.
New Braunfels authorities resumed the search for the two victims Thursday and located Clemens’ body at approximately 2 p.m. Crews continue to search for Paraskevopoulos of Alexandria, La.,
Remnants of Hermine swamped central and north Texas, causing at least three deaths.
