LCRA ends all Highland Lakes floodgate operations
The Lower Colorado River Authority said all floodgate operations along the Highland Lakes in response to the rain brought by Tropical Storm Hermine have ended.
The LCRA opened all five gates at Tom Miller Dam, between Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake, Tuesday night. Opening the floodgates allowed LCRA to pass water inflow to Lake Austin and control lake levels. All floodgates were closed by 5 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the LCRA, releases from Lake Austin and inflows downstream of Austin caused the Colorado River to exceed flood stage at Austin early Wednesday.
Parts of Austin did experience overflow, and one woman attempting to drive over a bridge, where water had risen over the barricades, remains missing. Numerous Austin roads were also closed during that time, but most have reopened.
As of early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service predicted that the Colorado River at Bastrop, Smithville, La Grange, Columbus, Wharton and Bay City were all expected to rise above the bank, but remain below flood stage.
Meanwhile, the water level is up at Lake Travis. As of Thursday morning, the water level stood at 671 point 39 feet, nearly 7 feet above the historic average for September.
