Wading through what remains of the homes and vehicles damaged and, in some cases, destroyed by Tropical Storm Hermine’s heavy rainfall has begun in much of Central Texas.

One of the hardest hit communities in the area was a neighborhood in west Round Rock. The mud, the mess and the miles of cleanup that lie ahead have residents working hard to pick up the pieces.

"We'll just have to let that stuff dry and see what we can do with it," Mike Lawson said about a soaked photo album.

Lawson and his wife are trying to salvage family photos and their son's art.

"We are in a flood plain, hundred-year flood plain. This is our 100 years," he said.

Moving to the area three years ago, the Lawson's never imagined the creek that runs through their back yard would ever become an unwelcome part of their home.

"They, supposedly, haven't had a flood since the 80s. When that flood occurred, they had redone a lot of bridging and water diversion in the area, so we were confident, going to bed at night, we wouldn't have a problem," Lawson said.

That problem became a fight for survival as rising water tore through the entire neighborhood. One neighbor's car ended up on top of another neighbor's car.

"That's my car. My husband saw it float by, and the truck floated by, but it stopped at the front door," Carol Jarnagin, an area resident, said.

City of Round Rock officials said 81 houses were flooded, and eight had between 37 and 60 inches of water.

As police patrolled the area, a church group arrived to lend support.

"There's a point at which everybody needs help and that everybody needs to put out that helping hand," Derick Zwerneman, of Celebration Church, said.

It's a helping hand Lawson welcomed, as church members helped him move everything out of a home he hopes to return to someday soon. The Lawsons said their home is insured.

"We'll try to rebuild it," he said.

The Lawsons said they will rent a home for the time being.
