Although the rain has stopped, some residents on Old Spicewood Springs Road are still having trouble getting in and out of the area.
The road remained closed Thursday, as parts of it were still underwater. In other parts of the city, floodwater had already receded and roads that were closed down during heavy rainfall and flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Hermine had reopened.
Old Spicewood Springs Road, on the other hand, was ripped apart by torrential rains. Some in the neighborhood blame the county for what they call a persistent problem.
"The road needs to be brought up to some kind of standards," resident Jennifer Burcham said. "There's also no shoulder. And it's widely used by cyclists; it's very popular for cyclists, because it's a very beautiful road."
Others that live this area don't mind the road closures and hope the road stays as is for a reason.
"This is probably one of the last kinds of rural places in northwest Austin that's not paved over, that's not four-lane, that's not bridges like the one that the lady went over on 2222," resident Phil Bautista said. "So, most of the people that drive on this road drive down here because it's that pretty."
Burcham believes some construction would go a long way.
"If we had, at least, a crossing as a passable bridge, that would free up at least 20 or 30 houses,” she said.
Travis County Commissioner Karen Huber's office said no one has brought the flooding issue up since Huber has been in office.
The county said it has no immediate plans to do any upgrades on the road.
