Austin is considered a hub for one of the fastest growing sports in the country, disc golf.

Pease Park, in Central Austin, has been a popular course for disc golfers for more than 20 years. Back in June, the city said it will shut down the course in December to allow the park to heal from erosion, compacted soil and worn-down vegetation.

City officials proposed moving the disc golf course to Roy Guerrero Park. Wednesday, protesters at Roy Guerrero said that land has been designated for affordable housing.

According to officials with the neighborhood, the city bought an additional 25 acres close to the park in 2008.

“There is a tremendous need for affordable housing and those 25 acres should be made available for housing, not a disc golf course,” spokesperson for the River Bluff Neighborhood Association Daniel Llanes said.

Others say the city needs to better plan the course move and say their sport deserves more recognition.

“I’m sorry to say they're going to have to spend money on this, and what they have to realize is that they have a commodity in disc golf,” owner of Shannon’s Disc Golf Shop, Shannon Bowles, said. “When you shut down a course, you're going to put pressure on all the other courses because of the growing disc golf community you have to support the numbers.”

Bowles said she didn't realize the park was reserved for affordable housing. She said she wants Pease Park to stay open.

She also said Roy Guerrero is not the ideal replacement.
