Austin is one of only a handful of towns to sell the Chevrolet Volt, a new electric car with a
long waiting list.
Sales consultant Dennis Chafin said the Volt’s launch has brought in inquiries from plenty of out-of-towners.
"From the day that we announced Austin was going to be a launch city, we started getting phone calls, local phone calls initially and then from all over the country," he said.
Chafin says the Volt is a game-changer in the auto industry.
"It's a true electric car. All of the drive systems operate on electricity. You have a approximately 40 mile range on the battery pack, but what General Motors and Chevrolet have done is eliminated the range anxiety of being a purely battery-driven car by putting in a gas operated generator," he said.
That makes for over 300 miles of drive time. What looks like an extension cable can be found in the trunk. The 120-volt cord plugs into the side of the car and can be placed in any household outlet.
Owners can also use a smart phone app to control their car. They can start the engine, lock the doors and even check the battery level with a mobile device.
Jerry Reynolds was more than excited when he was handed the key to his brand new Chevrolet Volt Tuesday.
"It's a dream come true. We've waited a long time, again putting the deposit in July and actually getting to enter the order in August working with the folks at Capitol Chevrolet," Reynolds said.
Reynolds said he was eager to make the purchase, even if it meant buying on the east or west coast. Luckily for him, he only had to travel from Dallas to get his dream car.
Over at Whole Foods in downtown Austin, Chris Simoes plugged in his new Volt at a charging station while he stopped in for lunch. He said he wouldn't be surprised if more charging stations started popping up around town.
"Maybe over time, we'll build all these charging stations as an infrastructure where we can drive as far as we want and we'll just plug in whenever our car gets tired," Simoes said.
As for Reynolds, he made it down to Austin despite struggling with cancer and is excited to spend time behind the wheel.
"It's kind of one of my bucket list items, I guess you could call it," Reynolds said.
The Chevrolet Volt costs more than $30,000. Dallas and Houston are expected to start selling Volts by springtime.
