Some Austin students are lugging around extra books for a good cause.
St. Andrew's partnered with Project Schoolhouse and Books Beyond Borders to collect book donations for recycling. The money from the project will be used to help build a school for kids in Nicaragua.
Joshua Nelson is a teacher at St. Andrew’s. He said the project teaches students about the conditions some kids have to live in to go to school.
"The school that we are helping out doesn't have a cement floor. They have a dirt floor. When it rains, it's muddy. Some of them only have one pen or pencil for the entire year," Nelson said.
Eighth-grader Zach Dell is helping with the book drive and says it's a good feeling.
"You get a lot of satisfaction out of what you're doing. Hopefully we'll make a big difference over in Nicaragua and help these kids get a better education," Dell said.
A couple of the students will take a trip to Nicaragua during spring break to visit the community they helped.
St. Andrew’s students will be in front of the school taking book donations from 7 to 7:50 a.m. through Friday.
