Jared Loughner was taken Wednesday to a specialized facility in Missouri for a court-ordered mental evaluation.
Loughner is the accused shooter in the Jan. 8 attack at a community meet-and-greet with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz. Six people were killed in the incident. Thirteen others were wounded, including Rep. Giffords.
Loughner’s lawyers are asking an appeals court to reject the judge's order for the evaluation, citing it would cause irreparable harm to his rights while the matter is being reviewed by the courts. They also don't want prosecutors to have a video tape of the exam.
The evaluation will determine whether Loughner understands the nature and consequences of the charges he faces.
