While suffering from an overactive bladder may be embarrassing to talk about, doctors say it’s a fairly common problem.

One in four women suffer from an overactive bladder, but luckily a clinic in Austin has new medical technology to help.

Pearl Fields suffered from an overactive bladder for years. It was a problem she had trouble coming to terms with at first.

"I just thought they were stress-related, athletics,” she said. “I do tennis and golf as well as work, and so I had a couple of episodes and was basically in denial. I didn't realize I had a problem."

Fields’ condition changed her life, but like many women who have an overactive bladder, she suffered in silence.

"I would dehydrate myself, and I didn't realize I was doing that and I would stop drinking an hour before I left that way I could do errands, appointments and stuff like that," she said.

When Fields finally had enough, she met with the staff at Urology Austin, the only lab in Central Texas that uses video urodynamics. The technology enables doctors to treat patients with more severe symptoms.

"It involves X-ray dye, and we can see what's happening to the bladder. Instead of looking at the computer model, we can actually see what's happening,” Dr. Grady Bruce said. “I'll admit it's not necessary for every patient, but for complex situations like our model patient today, we can see exactly what we need to do when we go to the operating room."

Insurance helped Fields cover the procedure, and now she's back to feeling herself again.

"It was wonderful, I mean it was worth every cent to be able to go out and live life as we should without having to worry about risking your life or stopping the car every few minutes," she said.
