A man has been arrested and charged with two Austin murders.

Austin police responded to a shots fired call in the 7100 block of Dixie Drive around 6 p.m. Monday. A woman in the back of the residence heard the gunshots, came out and discovered the bodies of 24-year-old Norma Hurtado and 57-year-old Maria Hurtado.

Witnesses told officers after they heard gun shots, they saw two males running and fleeing the scene in a green Chevy blazer.

APD detectives initially deemed 45-year-old Jose Alfonso Aviles a person of interest in their murders.

Members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force later arrested Aviles in the San Antonio area. He's since been charged with capital murder, and remains in the Bexar County Jail with no bond.

Police said Aviles is the father of a woman who was in a relationship with Norma Hurtado. According to police, it was that woman who discovered the bodies. Police added that her family was upset over the relationship.

“It had been an ongoing dispute between the two families, and it turned tragic into a horrific act of violence with the death of two individuals,” APD’s Lt. Gena Curtis said.

Police said the father previously threatened harm toward Norma.

“This was a very isolated incident,” Curtis said. “There is no fear to the community.”

Austin police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call APD homicide detectives at (512) 477-3588.
