Musicians gathered around pianos throughout Austin to raise money for Pinetop Perkins’ foundation Sunday.

About 20 local pianists played blues, rock and classical tunes on the “Play me I’m yours” pianos. The musicians gathered to help raise money for a man who was such an influence in the music community.

"He was just one of those people that had no problem with anybody and loved music,” Pinetop’s close friend Derek O’Brian said.

Pinetop died in March at the age of 97 and left behind many wonderful memories.

“He was just such a gentleman and had such a presence,” Kit Holmes said.

The pianists hoped to recreate that presence Sunday night. Matt Wilson, who played at Eastwood park, said, “We are going to play some tunes for him tonight.”

Sunday was their last chance to play on the pianos. During the first week of May, they’ll be taken down.

“I think this project has given them a opportunity and a reason to play in places they normally don’t get to, and I think it brought the community together in these spots,” organizer Jonny Walker said.

These pianists will miss playing outside, and while Pinetop is gone his influence remains, just like the feeling of the pianos.
