Gov. Rick Perry will hold a formal signing ceremony for a law that requires doctors to conduct a sonogram before performing an abortion.

The governor declared the matter emergency legislation earlier this session. He's already officially signed the bill. The ceremony Tuesday is intended to congratulate supporters of the measure.

The law goes into force on Sept. 1. It requires doctors to perform a sonogram before giving a woman an abortion. It also requires the doctor to make the image of the fetus and the fetal heart beat available to the woman.

It also requires the doctor to describe the presence of internal organs or limbs. An exemption is only allowed in emergencies, in cases of rape or incest and when the fetus has fatal abnormalities.
