The organizers of "SlutWalk Austin" say they know the name of their event is controversial. That's why they're using it.
For the thousands of men and women who marched in downtown Austin on Saturday, the word "slut" is something that needs to be taken back.
"I think it's important for people to realize that it doesn't matter if you're a slut or not," blogger Julie Sunday said. "Oftentimes police will decline to prosecute someone because the girl was a slut. And they'll say they couldn't ever get a jury to convict because the woman had a reputation."
The event started in Toronto after a police officer there reportedly said, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." It has since spread to more than 50 cities worldwide.
