Diehard fans of the University of Texas Longhorns started their party more than 12 hours before kickoff Saturday.
In the area surrounding Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, hundreds of tailgaters can be found setting up shop. Pop-up tents and smokers take the place of parked cars in Downtown Austin parking lots.
Tailgating comes natural to many U.T. alumni, including Charley Montero. He leads the Flask Section 106 Tailgaters.
"I have a couple degrees from U.T. Our oldest daughter just graduated and is a fifth generation Texas Ex," Montero said.
He and seven friends have held season tickets in that section for 21 years. The reason he comes out for the pre-game parking lot parties each year: camaraderie.
"We've made some good friends,” Montero said. “People just walking by who stop and talk to us. They see our Bevo or our signs."
Bryan Moon helps operate the All Day Tailgaters tent with his brother and friends.
He says he was rooting for the Longhorns before learning how to walk.
"My parents instilled it. Even though they didn't go to the University of Texas, we've just been lifetime fans," Moon said.
For Moon, the Longhorns mean much more than just a team or an opportunity to party. His tailgate turns into a family reunion every home game.
"Texas is all about football," he said. "That's what the fans here are all about."
