YNN's Jeff Stensland reported Monday night from Vandegrift High School, the shelter for the Steiner Ranch evacuees. The fire at Steiner Ranch has destroyed 25 homed and damaged 20 others, according to Austin’s Mayor Lee Leffingwell. Fire crews have gained 25 percent containment of the now 125-acre blaze.
Evacuated residents who need information on the status of their home can go to Vandegrift High School. The school has a list of the damaged and destroyed homes and will only release information to those with photo ID with a matching address.
The fire is currently spreading in three different directions. The high wind and dry conditions are still making things extremely difficult for firefighters.
Power is out throughout the area and officials say it will be a “slow, tedious process” to get power working again.
There is no contingency plan for pets. Crews are doing their best to protect everything they can.
Longhorn Village is a retirement community in the area that has not had mandatory evacuations. They are undergoing what’s called “shelter-in-place” and doing what they can to stay safe there.
The retirement community has a generator which is providing them with power. Air conditioning is available in the hallways, but not the rooms. Fire crews are making sure Longhorn Village’s generator stays stocked with fuel.
No one will be able to return to Steiner Ranch until 8:00 a.m. Tuesday at the earliest, but this remains subject to change.
There are still no fatalities or major injuries to report.
Travis County evacuees can receive the latest information by calling (512) 974-6199.
