Bastrop fire remains out of control, more homes destroyed

Rick Perry's full press conference from Monday.Update Monday at 6 p.m.- Gov. Perry came home from planned presidential campaign stops out of state Monday to get a firsthand look at the fires.
Earlier, the governor flew over to get a bird's eye view of the fire and the damaged it has caused.
Later, the governor toured the evacuation shelter at Bastrop Middle School. Around 5 p.m., he met with fire officials in Bastrop and then spoke to the public.

Watch the video above for the latest press conference on the Bastrop Complex Fire.Update 4:15 p.m.- During a second press conference Monday, Bastrop County representatives said the mega brush fire in Bastrop has “grown considerably” as the day continued.
The blaze now stretches 25,000 acres and has destroyed 476 homes.
Officials reported that residents east of Highway 95 need to boil their water. Also, power outages are still widespread in the area, but crews are working to get power back on. Some residents nearby but not affected by the fire may also be suffering from a loss of power.
Gov. Rick Perry will address the situation in Bastrop shortly.

Earlier-The monster brush fire dubbed the “The Bastrop County Complex Fire” has destroyed more than 300 homes and prompted the evacuation of 5,000 people, county officials say. The blaze is zero percent contained.
Based on varying reports, the fire ranges between 14,000-25,000 acres. Bastrop County officials plan to do their own assent of the area later Monday via helicopter.
The blaze began as a series of fires Sunday, but has since burned together and even jumped the Colorado River at points.
During a press conference Monday morning, county and state representatives said the fire may get worse before it gets better, due to the gusty winds and dry conditions plaguing the area.
Five shelters are now open for evacuees: Bastrop Middle School and Ascension Catholic Church, Smithville- Recreation Center, Grace Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church.

Bastrop ISD will be closed Tuesday, including extra-curricular activities.
