Of the hundreds of homes leveled by the Bastrop County wildfire, one in particular was brought into stark relief yesterday.
County and state officials held a briefing on the site of Roscar Chocolates.
Before the fire, it was a thriving local business and the home of its owner, Frans Hendricks.
"I was standing here for a day and a half, watching my property, and I couldn't get here, you know? And the time when we evacuated, we had to run out of the building. The only thing I had with me was what I wear right now," Hendriks said.
He said he lost everything in the fire. He moved to Austin from San Antonio, where he owned a fine dining restaurant.
According to the governor's office, in addition to the more than 1300 homes destroyed at least 20 businesses were lost in the fire.
Hendriks said he’s not sure if he will rebuild, but said he knows he is not alone as he and the community move forward.
