YNN's Alana Rocha filed the above video report. A 24-year-old man is in police custody after he barricaded himself in a South Austin home for nearly three hours Monday morning.
Deputies with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office say at 5:23 a.m., Todd Zurovetz burglarized a residence in the 9000 block of Feather Hill Road where he stole a loaded handgun, a box of ammunition and a 2001 Toyota Tundra.
According to officers, the truck was then spotted shortly before 7 a.m. on Manchaca Road. At that time, officers with the Austin Police Department assisted the TCSO deputies in a vehicle pursuit that ended with Zurovetz wrecking the Toyota Tundra.
Zurovetz then fled on foot to the 3700 block of Aspen Creek Parkway where he stole another vehicle and began to drive it towards officers, according to authorities.
Both an APD officer and a TCSO deputy fired shots at Zurovetz, both hitting him in the arm. At 7:36 a.m., Zurovetz wrecked the second vehicle in the 10100 block of Brodie Lane, and then barricaded himself in the nearby residence of Rudy Villarreal.
“He was trying to open the door. He said, ‘Man, I just got shot. I just got shot.’ I didn’t know who he was. I thought he needed help at first,” Villarreal said. “That’s when I heard all the officers yelling and stuff like that and that’s when he was hiding in the house.”
Officers used negotiators and tear gas to lure Zurovetz out of the house. He surrendered to SWAT officers at 10:15 a.m., and was taken to the hospital.
Bowie High School was on lockdown as a precaution during the incident.
Zurovetz is charged with a parole violation and evading arrest. His bond is set at $20,000.
