Baylor students Sara and Benjamin Roberts decided to transfer the message “
Don't rob me, Bro!” onto a t-shirt after a recent increase in armed robberies in the neighborhood around their school.
"We wanted to raise awareness about the danger posed to students around campus. We thought the best way to do that is through clever T-shirt," Benjamin said.
They’re hoping to catch the eye of fellow students with the catch phrase.
"We still see students running alone at night. We still know that kids are going out on the weekends, and staying out late and so we thought we could do something that would grab their attention," Sara said.
More than a year ago, Sara and Benjamin found out firsthand how easy it is to become a victim.
"We were sitting out on our front porch and a guy with a shotgun came around the corner and robbed us," Benjamin said.
Since October, Waco Police say nine incidents have been reported around Baylor with an armed man approaching victims, even in daylight.
Waco police are working with campus police to ramp up their efforts.
"We're sharing intelligence, we're passing information along and our detectives are working with Baylor PD detectives in an attempt to get these robberies stopped," Waco Police Department Sgt. Patrick Swanton said. "Our deal is to show a heavy presence, hopefully with all the officers in the area. Not all of them are uniformed. They don't necessarily see the presence there.”
This couple hopes to also keep up their effort.
"We would love to get more of a voice out there for the victims and awareness for the students," Sara said.
All through a shirt which they say is in no way intended to skirt around the seriousness of the issue.
“We're not here to minimize the very real danger that students at Baylor University and citizens of Waco feel towards this crime," Benjamin said.
So far, the students have shown their first batch of 30 shirts. They’re waiting for more to be printed. To purchase a shirt click here.
