A coalition of Latino groups is speaking out against Austin Independent School District's plan to turn management of two public schools over to a charter school company.

After a lengthy meeting Monday night, the school board postponed a vote on the plan which calls for IDEA Charter School to take over selected grades at Allan Elementary, and to eventually expand into Eastside Memorial High School.

Activists gathered Saturday to call for IDEA Charter's CEO to withdraw his proposal and to send a message to the school board.

"They are supposed to be administering quality public education for our students. If they can't do that then they need to go. They need to turn in their resignations," one demonstrator said.

"If Carstarphen thinks that is such a good idea then maybe they will hire her over there, because we no longer need her services here in Austin,” demonstrator Janie Rangel said.

The school board now plans to take up the vote on the in-district charter plan on Monday.
