A second teenager has died after a Dec. 27 auto-pedestrian collision in South Austin.

Police said 17-year-old Joshua Milton and 16-year-old Melodie Hewitt were attempting to cross South First near Thelma Drive when they were struck by a pickup truck.

Milton died at the scene and Hewitt was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with critical injuries. She died from those injuries on Dec. 31.

Family, friends and other community members organized a protest at the site of the crash during peak traffic hours Tuesday afternoon. They want a signal light to be installed at the crosswalk the teenagers were using when they were struck.

"Maybe if there had been something there then maybe this wouldn't have happened,” Milton’s stepmother, Elizabeth Milton, said. “That's what people that are taking their time with it need to understand. What if it was their child?"

Mayor Lee Leffingwell attended Tuesday's protest, and said the city will look into additional safety precautions at the intersection. The city must review both vehicle and pedestrian traffic patterns in the area before new lights can be installed.

"If there's something that we can do to prevent another tragedy like this we certainly should do it," Leffingwell said.

Police say the driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation. No charges are expected to be filed.

The incident produced Austin’s 53rd and 54th traffic fatalities of 2011. There were 49 traffic fatalities in the city in 2010.
