A local nonprofit is documenting Austin's history – one headstone at a time.
A group of volunteers with Save Austin Cemeteries hit the streets Saturday, taking photos of grave markers in East Austin's Oakwood Cemetery.
The cemetery is the city's oldest and is home to more than 10,000 headstones. None are recorded anywhere, so Save Austin Cemeteries is working to document each one.
Volunteers say it's an important step in preserving history, especially if a natural disaster, theft or vandalism was to occur.
