Michelle Worthy and her fiancé Patrick were both looking for jobs at the Austin-Travis County job fair, hunting for a new opportunity.

"Anything, any entry-level position, whatever is available," Michelle said. "When you live paycheck to paycheck and you lose that only thing it's difficult, but you got to do what you got to do."

One option for Michelle is becoming a firefighter, the Austin Fire Department needs women. Capt. Pablo Ruiz with AFD said it’s a position that doesn’t have to be a life-long dream.

"Eighteen years ago, I open the newspaper, I see Austin Fire department and I'm like why not?” he said. “Here I am, best mistake of my life."

Job fair attendee Vincent Johnson is retried, but is looking to get back to work. He browsed the health care tables, where Seton Medical was promoting 500 openings.

"It's like, OK, you've put in the brick patio, I've got all my securities under control and invested, it's like what do I do now," Johnson said. "Something which will hopefully help other people."

Austin is faring better than most across the country, the city’s jobless rate is 6.3 percent, compared to 8.5 percent nationally.
