February is National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about proper oral healthcare.

Local dentist Dr. Chad Denman with Family Tree Dental said a child should have his or her first check-up at six months old and continue seeing a dentist every six months thereafter.

He says it's crucial to protect baby teeth.

"The reason we want to keep the baby teeth is because at age 6, when you start getting your adult teeth, if they lose them early, adult teeth don't have that root to ride into the correct position in the mouth," Denman said.

He said parents should also pay attention to thumb-sucking. He said this can push the upper teeth out and the lower teeth in and the only way to correct it is with braces in the future.
