Active housewife, professional accountant throw hats in Killeen ring

Housewife JoAnn Demonbreun says she tries to vote in every election, but this time around, she is stepping up her participation.
With five open seats on the Killeen City Council, she is now vying for her very own seat on the dais.
"People need to get out and do something,” She said. “I've always heard ‘You get the government that you demand.’ If you don't demand it, you don't get it."
Demonbreun knows facing off against 15 other candidates isn not going to be easy.
"There's going to be some of us disappointed, but as long as you try the best you can do, that's it," she said.
One of those 15, Ralph Cossey Jr., is no stranger to the process. He unsuccessfully ran in 2009 and applied for an appointment last year.
With his service on several city committees, this software development manager feels he has a better grasp on what residents are looking for.
"I'd like to see citizens have more hope that their voices will definitely be heard," Cossey Jr. said.
He says his past professional experience as an accountant and financial analyst will also be assets.
"We're way behind in studying the budget and finding out what the expenditures are and what people are spending money on," he said. "Management in the city has to be the first priority of the council, making sure we have a sound foundation of leaders."
Demonbreun and Cossey Jr. will find out if their fellow residents agree on May 12 when they cast their votes.
