Most of Interstate 35 was closed in Round Rock Wednesday evening after a tractor-trailer rig caught fire and burned on southbound side of the highway.

Round Rock authorities said the truck driver pulled over and jumped from the rig after it caught fire at about 8:00 p.m. He was treated for minor injuries.

The truck was carrying appliance parts, and the burning cargo, diesel fuel and tires created towering flames and sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of the highway and northbound traffic stalled as drivers slowed to look at the scene.

Police were unsure how long the highway would remain close.
