Murder charges have been filed against the man police say killed a driver while trying to flee from police.

According the an arrest affidavit, Reynaldo Victor Hernandez Jr. stole a Ford F-250 from the Barton Creek Square Mall Friday afternoon, assisted by an accomplice driving a white Lincoln Navigator.

An officer responding to the 911 call spotted both the truck and the SUV on Capitol of Texas Highway, which is when police say Hernandez Jr. began to flee.

After a short chase, which police say reached speeds up to 95 mph, the stolen truck struck a car on the West Ben White Boulevard service road, killing its driver, James David Williford.

Police say Hernandez then ran into a nearby store, where he was spotted trying to change clothes. He lead officers on another pursuit before being captured.

In addition to murder, the Hernandez has been charged with evading arrest, theft, failure to stop and render aid as well as driving without a license. Bonds for the offenses total $1.21 million. He is currently in custody at the Travis County Jail.

It’s unclear if the driver of the Lincoln Navigator was also apprehended.
