Police have identified the pedestrian killed by an 18-wheeler on Interstate-35 early Wednesday morning.

Twenty-eight-year-old Christopher Menard was trying to cross the highway near 51st Street before the truck hit him.

Investigators say the truck driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting Menard, causing the trailer to overturn. Menard was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The overturned truck spilled hundreds of empty bottles onto the roadway.

It forced emergency crews to shut down a 10-mile stretch of I-35 for several hours through most of the morning commute.
