City crews are working through the summer heat to replace the underground infrastructure of Auditorium Shores.

The process requires workers to rip up the grounds to replace the irrigation systems. Crews spent the day Monday running wires for an underground sprinkler system.

City officials hope the project will save water while maintaining a green look and feel. The old system was manual, meaning someone used to have to walk to each irrigation head and physically flip a switch.

"It has been neglected quite a bit, because of the infrastructure there, the irrigation system has been out dated, and with all the events there it is hard to keep the turf green, and I think this is a positive step," Central Parks Division Manager Charles Vaclavik said.

The hike-and-bike portion of the park is not being impacted by construction. Even though about 40 percent of the dog park is closed off, most Austin residents are coping with the mess.

"I come down here for my dogs, they get to play they get to swim,” dog owner Tracy Spracklen said. "As long as they don't try to ban the off leash dog park, or try to change anything or charge you to be able to come out here and play with your dogs."

The project entered Phase 2 Monday and is expected to wrap up June 29.
