As we head into the brunt of the summer heat, gardeners in Central Texas need to keep a close eye on outdoor water usage.

Jessica Wilson with Austin’s Watershed Protection Department told YNN that mulch is a great way to keep your trees healthy during the summer months, but there are some common mistakes which can be easily avoided.

Make sure you’re mulch is no deeper than a thumb’s depth and keep the mulch at least a thumb’s width away from the tree,” Wilson said. “That allows the base to breath and you’re not trapping moisture directly up against the trunk.”
