Summer camps aren't just for youngsters.
"An Independent Me" (AIM) camp caters to adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The camp's grand opening was held in Cedar Park Saturday.
AIM offers campers the chance to learn vocational and life skills. They also offer the opportunity to interact with animals, garden and hang out with others like themselves.
The state's Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services helps provide the opportunity.
"They have really come on board with us. They're working with three or four of our campers. We're hoping they will work with all of our campers to get their obstacles out of the way, train them, find them jobs, give them job coaches and the support they need to be successful in those jobs," Autism Trust USA Chairman Dan Burns said.
Burns said AIM plans to become a residential campus in the fall. They’re currently looking for adults with autism who would like to become residents.
Burns said AIM also hopes to become an educational institution, working with area junior colleges and universities.
