Austin police are still looking for the gunman involved in a shooting on Sixth Street.

Four people, two men and two women, were shot in Downtown Austin’s entertainment district early Sunday morning. According to police, the two women were shot near the intersection of San Jacinto and East Sixth Streets around 2:30 a.m.

Two additional victims, both male, were later located. One had taken himself to a South Austin hospital and the other was found near East Seventh Street and Interstate 35.
Police said none of the victims had life-threatening injuries.

Bar owners and police are taking steps to keep downtown safe.

Bob Woody owns about six buildings along Sixth Street. He’s also the president of the East Sixth Street Community Association. Woody said Sunday’s shooting does not reflect the culture of Sixth Street.

"On a football weekend, we'll have 65,000 to 70,000 [people]. For an incident like this to take place with numbers that great, it is insignificant," he said.

Austin police currently use security cameras positioned around downtown to monitor large crowds and get a handle on problems before they get out of control. Downtown regulars say police presence in the sky and on the ground help them feel secure.

"Every walkway there are tons of cops. I mean everywhere you go, they are walking down the street. I feel completely safe," bar patron Dana LaRocque said.

While the crowds will continue to come, bar owners and patrons are confident this is a one-time incident.

Police do not have a suspect in custody. They're hoping surveillance video will provide clues about the identity of the shooter.
