The oldest victim of the recent mass shooting in Colorado is being remembered as a true Texas gentleman who was devoted to his children.

Friends of former-Austinite Gordon Cowden said after word spread that he was among the dead, his family has been overwhelmed with offers of support and prayers.

According to a statement released on behalf of family, the 51-year-old had taken his two teenage children to see the movie at midnight. His two sons made it out of the theater unharmed.

While the family is asking for privacy during their time of grief, they too are thinking of others.

Their statement goes on to say "Our hearts go out to everyone that has been harmed by this senseless tragedy."

Read the family's full statement below:

“Loving father, outdoorsman and small business owner, Cowden was a true Texas gentleman that loved life and his family. A quick witted world traveler with a keen sense of humor, he will be remembered for his devotion to his children and for always trying his best to do the right thing, no matter the obstacle.

"The family of Gordon Cowden wishes to express appreciation for the concern and prayers offered us during this very difficult time. Our hearts go out to everyone that has been harmed by this senseless tragedy."
