Austin police are investigating a suspicious death in the downtown area.

A bicyclist made a check welfare call to authorities a little after eight this morning.

Responding officers found a man near the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Colorado Street.

"They found a male in a sleeping bag. He appeared to be sleeping,” Veneza Bremner with the Austin Police Department said. “[It was] determined that he had some trauma to his body and so, it turned into a suspicious death."

Officials didn't go into detail about what kind of trauma the man suffered, but they say they believe he is homeless.

APD redirected traffic from the hike and bike trail while they investigated.

They are also blocking one eastbound lane of traffic on Cesar Chavez near the scene, but should have it open by early afternoon.
