A man on death row for the 2006 murder of an East Austin woman was found dead in his cell last weekend.

Corrections officials say Selwyn Davis was found unresponsive in his cell last Friday evening. Doctors pronounced the 30-year-old dead at the hospital.

In 2007, a Travis County jury sentenced Davis to death for the stabbing death of 57-year-old Regina Lara.

Prosecutors say Lara was the mother of Davis' ex-girlfriend. The day before the murder, Davis had beaten his ex-girlfriend badly enough to hospitalize her.

Police also believe he stole Lara's checkbook after raping a teenage girl inside her home.

Officials do not know how Davis died, but an autopsy is pending.
