Central Austin SWAT standoff ends with suspect in custody
Update: Police have taken the suspect into custody without incident.

According to police, an officer was flagged down just after 12:30 p.m. by someone who reported seeing an armed person in the area.

When police responded, they encountered an armed man in his 60s who barricaded himself inside of his home.

In what police called a typical reaction, Austin's SWAT team was called to the scene to assist.

Around 4 p.m., the suspect who police say has a history of mental health issues was taken into custody.

Earlier: Police have closed several blocks of Red River Street near Park Blvd., near the Hancock Shopping Center, as a precaution due to a SWAT situation nearby.

According to our photographer at the scene, the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad arrived shortly after 3:15 p.m.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area for a time. Most roads in the area have reopened.
