Combining growing plants with aquatic animals allows you to create a sustainable food production system.
The practice is called Aquaponics and Shawn Bishop with Third Coast Horticulture Supplies says anyone can set a system up.
“The sky’s the limit with what you can grow and the styles. There’s all kinds of DIY ways to do it where you can do it cheaply and efficiently. There’s all kinds of gear to take it as far as you want to go, but it’s universally one of the most efficient water conserving ways to produce food,” he said.
All you need is plants, a planter, lights, equipment for fish, fish and a couple of test kits.
“There are people who’ve produced a million pounds of food in an acre,” Bishop said.
