APD responds to crime lab probe
Austin police say most of the recommendations for crime lab operation made by the Texas Forensic Science Commission last week have already been put into play.

The commission cleared APD's crime lab Friday of any misconduct or negligence.

Two complaints had been filed, including one by a Fort Worth area forensic lab. That facility reached different results than APD when testing the same evidence.

Another complaint made by a former employee accused APD's lab of failing to follow proper procedures. Along with its ruling, the state commission did note some room for improvement.

"Some of what they recommended are policies that we had already in place and processes that were already in place," APD Assistant Chief Sean Mannix said. "Those things generally centered around how notes were taken and maintained in the forensic case files."

Assistant Chief Mannix says he's proud of the work product that comes out of APD’s crime lab, and is happy to have the investigation behind him.
