August 1 marks 46th anniversary of UT tower shooting

By: YNN Staff

Wednesday marks the 46th anniversary of the University of Texas tower shooting.

The 1966 rampage killed 17 people and injured 32. Former Marine and UT student Charles Whitman fired indiscriminately for 96 minutes before he was shot and killed by two police officers.

The first victim of the shooting arrived at Brackenridge Hospital just before 12:15 p.m. that day, followed by more patients every one to two minutes.

The tragedy led to the creation of the trauma care system UMC-Brackenridge has today.

A ceremony was held Wednesday morning to remember Whitman's victims at the Tranquility Garden at Brackenridge's Clinical Education Center.

A moment of silence was followed by the unveiling of a plaque presented by the Austin Police Department to Brackenridge.

The plaque commends hospital staff for their exceptional response that horrific day.
