A celebration on the shores of Lady Bird Lake Friday marked the launch of the construction phase of the boardwalk trail completion project.
Once completed, the boardwalk phase will turn the trail into a continuous loop by closing the gap on the trail's east end. Part of the boardwalk will be on land, but part will actually extend over Lady Bird Lake.
Mayor Lee Leffingwell said this final phase is about more than just the closing of a gap.
"The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail is a major and perhaps the major recreation area for all of Austin,” Mayor Leffingwell said. “A transportation corridor and a big part of what attracts people and businesses to our city."
The trail has been under construction for over 40 years.
According to the mayor, Austin voters recently approved a bond measure to put $14 million toward the trail completion project.
The Austin trail foundation also raised $3 million for the project.
