Update: Investigators say discarded smoking materials caused the fire in Northwest Austin Wednesday morning.
Earlier: Fire crews are clearing the scene of a fire in Northwest Austin.
Austin Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire at a sixplex located at 7811 Parliament Place, near Spicewood Springs Road and Highway 183 around 7 a.m. Wednesday.
When crews arrived, one unit was heavily involved with fire in first and second floor and the attic.
“It did go to a second alarm approximately 20 minutes later for additional manpower since the building is so large, we wanted to make sure that we had the fire cut off,” AFD Battalion Chief Thayer Smith said.
The second alarm was cancelled shortly after.
Smith said 10 people were affected by the fire. One unit was completely destroyed by the blaze. The adjacent unit contained smoke, fire and water damage. Four other apartments contained light damage, and residents will be able to reoccupy those units later Wednesday.
