Anyone walking by Eighth Street and Congress Avenue recently may have noticed a familiar mural missing.

Recently, the new owners of Hickory Street partnered with the Austin Museum of Art and Laguna Gloria to allow for a new mural three to four times a year.

The new owners bought the restaurant last October and reopened right before South by Southwest.

They say they liked the old mural just fine, but wanted to try something new.

"The idea really was to do a rotating mural project. This is a great location at Eighth Street and Congress Avenue. It's an opportunity to do a public works of art project, and so the idea was just to continue to do something that could be refreshed and made new bring something new to this corner," Hickory Street Owner Brendan Puthoff said.

The mural, called “The Austinites,” was painted by local artist Shawn Gillespie, and it was on the side of Hickory Street Bar and Grill since 2009.
