Council gives revised bond package first go-ahead
Austin's proposed bond package has cleared its first hurdle after a stalemate at city council Tuesday.
Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole brought to the table changes incorporated from two different proposals made earlier this week. She asked to cut about $11 million from city facilities and transportation projects in order to fund other needs. It passed on first reading during a special meeting Wednesday morning.
Cole’s tweaks put the overall price tag at less than $385 million and will avoid the need for a tax rate increase.
"Having a small package, the needs of the city are very broad,” Cole said. “Trying to balance that is taking a lot of effort."
Council members Laura Morrison and Kathie Tovo voted against the proposal.
A second reading is scheduled for Friday afternoon, with a special meetings also set for Saturday and Monday. If given the final go-ahead, the package will hit the ballot for voters this November.
