A southeast Austin apartment fire displaced 17 residents.
Investigators say improperly discarded cigarettes caused a fire at the Forest Hills Apartments on Willow Creek Drive.
The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday. Fire officials said heavy fire was coming from one of the units. Flames moved quickly past the roof line.
"The building that was on fire was already endangering buildings on either side. Crews did a great job keeping the fire contained to the building where the fire originated," Austin Fire Department Battalion Chief Palmer Buck said.
The Red Cross was called in to help residents displaced by the fire. There were no reports of injuries.
