Tuesday, Scott and White in Temple broke ground on a five-story pediatric clinic, which will house multiple specialty services under one roof.

The services available will include psychiatry, cardiology, a pediatric neuroscience center and a children's cancer and blood disorder center.

Carrie Jo Howard knows just how important a hospital can be when a child is in need. Her 13-year-old son, Noah, fell off his skateboard two years ago. He fractured his skull and required brain surgery. The injury left him deaf in one ear, something he continues to receive treatment for today.

"It can happen to anyone in the blink of an eye,” Howard said. β€œIt's not something you can plan for or nothing you expect."

That's why families like the Howards see the construction of a new pediatric outpatient clinic in Temple as a benefit for other families in the future.

"I think it means they can get really specialized care right here at home. They don't have to travel," Howard said.

The new clinic will be located next to Scott and White's McLane Children's Hospital, with 135 exam rooms.

"Being right next to the hospital and bringing all of the pediatric colleagues here not only provides that one stop shop for our families, but provides all of our colleagues an opportunity to interact,” Dr. John Boyd said.

Construction of the $32 million facility is expected to be completed by fall of next year.
