Austinites weigh in on possible property tax hike
Austinites will have two chances to chime in on a proposed property tax increase.
There will be two public hearings on a possible 4.5 percent property tax hike. If adopted, the amount of taxes due on the average home would be $1,284. The average taxable value of a home in the City of Austin, in 2012, is just over $254,000.
City council members voted 6-0 to consider the increase. Council member Bill Spelman was not present during the vote.
The first public hearing will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at city council chambers. The second meeting will be held Aug. 30.
