Ben White flyover to open for Friday commuters

Ben White flyover to open for Friday commuters
People who live south of the city might find a smoother commute on Friday morning.

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say they will open a new flyover before the morning rush hour.

The flyover is a direct connection for people going from MoPac to Ben White Boulevard.

Northbound drivers coming into Austin on MoPac will be able to get on eastbound Ben White without going through a stop light.

The project was delayed a few months last year when the original contractor went bankrupt.

Now that it's complete, TxDOT expects the new flyover will handle thousands of cars a day.

"As the area down along south MoPac continues to grow, not only will it handle the existing traffic, but we expect future development in that area," TxDOT spokesperson John Hurt said.

Only one more flyover needs to be finished for the MoPac /Ben White interchange to be complete. That will be the connector from westbound Ben White to southbound MoPac.

TxDOT says that roadway should be open by Thanksgiving.
