Central Texans gathered to honor the lives of those lost 11 years ago today in the September 11th attacks.

Austin firefighters held a memorial at Buford Tower Tuesday morning.

“We had several firefighters that, as part of Texas Taskforce One, and the federal search and rescue team spent almost 10 days work ground zero. Those firefighters have come back and been wonderful historians of what happened there,” Battalion Chief Palmer Buck said. “We feel like we share what they went through. We live through those stories.”

Buck said the ceremony is to remember, but also a reminder of why they continue to serve.

The group held a bagpipe service in the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday afternoon.

More services will be held into the evening, including a candlelight vigil on the southeast steps of the Capitol at 8 p.m Tuesday.
